time tracking for story please!

I love Pivotal. My company is required to track our time as well. Entering the work I do in two separate systems is a pain, and worse, feels like a major waste of time.
If there were a way to add increments of time (start time, stop time) and description of what was done during the increment, it would be amazing. Especially if it were possible to report on this time at the detail, story, and project level, by project/person.
That way, as a developer, I know what tasks are taking up my time and perhaps I can optimize, but the other benefit is my time reports come from the same application where I'm tracking my work, and I can report at the level of detail that my manager(s) care about.
To me, this would make Pivotal the perfect application. -

The existing time-tracking doesn't answer this feature request.

No, time keeping is manual, Tracker only keeps track of your velocity at the level of a project. At Pivotal Labs, we normally take a few minutes at the end of each day to record how many hours we spent on each client project, for invoicing purposes. " -

I think time tracking would make this the ultimate project management tool. The only thing that I would ask for after that was an android application that worked as well as the website does.

How difficult is to calculate the time between Start and Finish buttons clicks?
I'm paining to use 2 systems here. The scrum master always asks how many time I really spend on each task. -

im doing a php page to meansure it using api.
I just need to filter the accepted stories and calculate the difference between accepted_date and start_date. I hope it works.

I tried to do this, but I just saw that API cant give me the history of the story, neither the start date.

but thinking that created_date woul helpme, but it doesn't.
I needed a started_date or something like that, otherwise I'll measuring the time between the creation and finish, not the time worked. =/

Hey Guys,
If anyone here is open to using Grindstone 2 to handle their time tracking then I would recommend using Grindstone Pivotal Sync as an integrated solution for tracking and submitting time related to Pivotal Tracker projects/stories. Grindstone 2 to is a robust time tracking desktop application that will allow you to select a story (imported from Pivotal Tracker) and click a start/stop button to track time for that particular story. Once you are ready to submit the tracked time to Pivotal Tracker you can run the Grindstone Pivotal Sync tool. This tool will update Grindstone 2 with the stories found in Pivotal Tracker and then submit any previously unsubmitted time as new shifts in Pivotal Tracker. That being said, Grindstone 2 can be found here, and Grindstone Pivotal Sync can be found here. Keep in mind that Grindstone Pivotal Sync is open source, written by yours truly on behalf of Mobile Accord, and can be customized to suite your needs. Below is the url for the GitHub repository:

I'm scanning the solutions for issue/bug/project/timetracking. While pivotal seems very clever and easy to use, it's sad that time tracking can't be done with it well.

danp, what most of us are asking is a way of seeing how much time was spent over each story. I'd like to know how much time the team is spending on bugs vs features.

We are tracking everything within a single projects, leveraging Epics to group stories by themes etc.
Its really important to us to be able to measure time tracking per Story. Manually entering it would be great for now. Just need an icon on each story to be able to enter it in a similar manner as the project time tracking.

Yes, there are a lot of tools that track time and some specific tools provide indepth analysis, such as time spent on a project or software or tool and even a website or a article. We use Replicon Inc Project Tracking Software that helps us in tracking employee time, project bills, in-depth time analysis, etc.

It seems Pivotal Tracker doesn't keep track of what time exactly someone hit the "START" button on a story. I tried a third party tool (which I don't recall the name) to get a broader analysis on the project but it didn't help much on this issue.
I believe this require a change in Pivotal Tracker software. It seems to be so simple to implement... Don't understand why they're missing this feature. -

I will be forced to close the account incase PT is unable to see the importance of this. Or atleast give an alternative way to use it without this functionality. We are unable to use the tool at the moment.

I am transitioning from Kanbanflow.com to Pivotal Tracker. In Kanbanflow, there is an embedded Pomodoro timer. It is VERY, VERY clean and simple.
Can I get something like that here in Pivotal Tracker?

Why exactly do we want this feature? A story or bug development effort shouldn't be measured in hours. I think we're being too picky on something that's counter-agile.
Now I really hope they NEVER add this feature. Any poorly agile educated manager will abuse it.
Nevertheless I'd like to hear from Pivotal Labs guys about this subject. They're too quiet on such a popular topic. -

Because from the standpoint of the project manager, rather than development lead, it is important to know whether the team's estimates are reasonable, vis-a-vis actual hours expended. Developers deal in points. PM's deal in whether the amount of work expected by the client is delivered within the XX team hours available in any given sprint. If the work slated for a sprint is not fully delivered, it is important to know (and to be able to explain to the client) what took longer than expected. This information, in turn, can help inform the team's estimates at the next sprint meeting.

Aggree with kazarnyc entirely, as another independent project lead. I think the in-house team and external contractor/client mentality is entirely different, and the reason this (time tracking) isn't seen as important.

Even when I have worked (as a contractor) closely with an in-house team ... the CTO needs to have a general idea, up front, of the budget and the expected scope to be delivered within that budget. IMO this is where agile development methodologies and mentality has not met the needs of the corporation that is paying for it all. The CTO has a bottom-line responsibility to deliver what the corporation needs within the budget.
Of course all sorts of issues arise during the course of development that will impact original estimate and expectations... everything from a bug in the app development platform being used or a prefab framework (e.g., Drupal) that requires hours of innovation, programing, testing to work around, to requirements poorly expressed (or expressed only after a feature is already built), to shifting business rules, you name it.
Therefore the project manager and CTO need to have periodic budget review meetings to see how reality is shaping up vis-a-vis expectations. They need to analyze where and why and how timeframe and budget have deviated from the original project plan. They need to prep a report they can bring into a boardroom meeting. They need to create mid-project budget and scope modifications, make adjustments to the expectations, write up change orders required for the accounting system, and so on.
How this can be done, or done well, without time-tracking against stories is beyond me. -

One of the most critical and fundamental requirements of development is accurate estimations - for agile, this means to be useful it must be at the story level. I'm so completely frustrated to have set up lots of epics and stories in my demo account only to find that Pivotal "TRACKER" does not do either directly - or at the very least allow me to enter a value, that simple thing.
Judging by the number of posts and content, it's clearly a high priority client requirement, PT Chaps!
We will sadly - because so many other things are good, be having to go back to Atlassian JIRA - not as simple to use, but has the complete functionality.
If you guys do get organised on this, please let me know. Would like to come back... -

I am in the process of evaluating agile tools.
Love the simple interface, but the lack of the time tracking could be a deal breaker.
I find the comment about 'poorly educated agile managers abusing' rather myopic.
It is all about the "Why would we even want this feature" Are you a developer or project manager?
Of course a developer does not want anything to get in their way of development such as pesky time tracking...
Not sure the developers would have a job if it was not for managers having to be responsible for ensuring a project was on budget, and the client was forewarned about time overages.
The bottom line is that many companies would like to use Pivotal Tracker to track time. Seems like a fairly simple addition that would seal the deal for me. -

It seems everybody worried about this feature are "project managers" trying to fit agile management into tools like Microsoft Project.
If you're a project manager in an agile team, then you probably don't have an agile team! -

Why isn't it enough to say "We did this bunch of stuff in two weeks. This one was easier and that one was harder and took us a long time."? Why does one need to know exactly how much time passed between the "start" and the "finish" of a feature? What if someone paused to help someone else? What if one of the pair programmers had a fight with his girlfriend then someone else from the team left his less important feature behind and came to the rescue of this more important feature?

I really wish PT had inbuilt time tracking when I start and finish working on tasks - the lack of it is the main reason I haven't signed my team up at the moment.
I'm not a fan of the third-party integrations and I'm reluctant to duplicate admin/costs twice to do such a small extension.
It seems such an obvious omission and a popular request! Implement it as a setting and hide the timer feature for the agile purists! Sadly, the rest of us need one foot in each camp. Agile delivers the project. Time tracking pays the bills! -

1,000 thumbs up to this request. I think it's a win-win for PMs and Devs - hours / time tracking is great for invoicing, but activity tracking could really help for estimating & activity focused tracking.
