How do I manage people working on two different releases at the same time?
It seems like it's difficult to manage ideas of concurrency -- if we have a small team where, say, two people are working on one feature, and another person is working on another feature, the timeline only really allows for working on stories/releases in a linear fashion.

Inappropriate? As long as they're all working on the same project you're not missing anything: you have a team working on a set of tasks, starting with the most important and working down to the least important. As a whole team, there is no way to work on tasks *except* in linear fashion.
